Children love and want to be loved and they very much prefer the joy of accomplishment to the triumph of hateful failure. Do not mistake a child for his symptom.
Erik Erikson
Erik Erikson was born in Frankfurt, Germany on June 15, 1902. Erikson's father left his mother before Erikson was born. His young mother married a physician named Dr. Theodor Homberger. D. Homberger raised Erikson as his own blood. When Erikson was finally told the truth, Erikson felt confused about who he was. This experience is what lead to his interest in the formation of identity. Erikson studied from the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society and earned a certificate for psychoanalysis. Erikson died on May 12, 1994.
Erikson is most famous for his Theory of Psychosocial Development. He took Freud's theory of Psychosexual Development and modified it. The 1st level is Basic trust vs Mistrust, which is where you determine if your world is predictable and supportive. 2nd Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt, which is there you determine whether you can do things yourself oe if you must rely on others. 3rd Initiative vs Guilt, which is where you question if you are good or bad. The 4th is Industry vs Inferiority, which is where you ask if you will be successful or not. The 5th is Identity Vs Role Confusion, which is when you ask who you are. The 6th is Intimacy vs Isolation, which is when you decide if you will share your life or stay alone. The 7th is Generativity vs Stagnation, which is when you ask yourself if you will succeed. The 8th and final is Ego Integrity vs Despair is when you ask yourself if you have lived a full life. Erikson's theory helped researchers understand our personality.
