A man who has been the indisputable favorite of his mother keeps for life the feeling of a conqueror.
Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud was born on May 6, 1856 in the town of Frieberg, Moravia. His family moved from Frieberg to Vienna, where he grew up most of his life. Freud was home schooled up until he went to Spurling Gymnasium, where he graduated Summa cum Laude. After that he went to the University of Vienna and studied medicine and became a famous physician. After his mentor and friend Dr. Breuer showed him the case about Anna O., Freud became obessed with the emotional disorder hysteria. Sigmund Freud died on September 23, 1939.
Anna O. was about the woman named Bertha Pappenheim, who suffered from hysteria. The symptoms she had was a nervous cough, anesthesia, and paralysis. Dr. Breur and Freud used "talking cure" to cure Anna. This worked until Breur stopped seeing her after she acted like she was pregnant. Then she got worse and was institutionalized, but later was released and lived a normal life. She became a social worker and a women's right activist.
Sigmund Freud came up with the Theory of Psychosexual Development. The stages of this was 1. Oral Stage, the first 18 months where the Infant is able to pleasure itself through the touch of it mouth. 2. Anal Stage, from 18 months to 3 years old the child finds pleasure through pooping and the child also becomes more independent by choosing not to poop when the parents put them on the pot. 3. Phallic Stage, is from 3 to 6 years. The child figures out the differences between boys and girls. Girls become "penis envy" and develop hate towards their mother for the lack of a penis. Boys fear that if they mess with their genitals, that they will be castrated like girls. 4. Latency Stage, is from 6 to puberty. This is the time that children get "the talk" and feelings of shame, and disgust, which hinders their sexual instincts. 5. Genital Stage, is from puberty to adulthood. This is when sexually feelings come back to play. Girls continue to feel "penis envy" and want a baby to make up for the lack of a penis. As you grow up and through the stages, you find a partner and a relationship with mutual love, it is due to this stage that your focus becomes on one person.
Freud's work allowed for the area of psychoanalyst to develop. Freud's controversial work allowed for other psychologist to come up with new theories opposing Freud's sexual theories. His work also developed psychotherapy, which helps people today.
